We were expecting a Budget light in content, overshadowed by looming Brexit decisions.
In a surprise move, Chancellor Philip Hammond decided to put forward a bullish approach, tackling issues at the top of the people’s agenda.

More money for schools, hospitals, a greater minimum wage and reduced business rates for small businesses.  An “end to austerity” was the subtext.

The news wasn’t all sweetness and light, however. Some meatier and tougher decisions lie deeper in Hammond’s Red Book.
